Here is a short version

He wrote a paid post that was positive
His readers reported that the service he wrote about (ePerks) wasn't as great as he thought
He wrote a followup post that made his subscribers aware of the comments on the previous post
The comments exploded, with lots of negative comments, plus comments that were overly positive, often from the same IP address using different names.
