If you’re planning on scoring some deals on Black Friday, prepare ahead of time to make sure you walk away happy with what you’ve bought and spent. Below are 12 tips to make your Black Friday shopping trip a success:

Make a list

Black Friday is not the best time to go out just to browse. To maximize your savings (and prevent yourself from overspending just because something looks like a great deal!), make two lists — a shopping list of the deals you want to take advantage of and a gift list with the people that you still need to buy for. Start by scanning the ads and writing down any deals that are within your budget for yourself or as a gift. Take a separate list with you so that if you come across a great deal on a fondue set, you’ll be able to quickly scan your list to see that you still need to buy for Aunt Mildred, who happens to love fondue.

Prioritize

Once you have your shopping list done, decide which items are your highest priority. Prioritize both by store and by item so that you start with the deals that are most important to you.

Be realistic

Realistically, you’re going to have to choose just one doorbuster item at one store as your top priority because you simply won’t be able to wait in line to be the first person at each store. You’ll also want to be realistic about how much you can get done in the amount of time you have to shop and how long your energy will hold up.

Take a shopping buddy

That said, taking a shopping buddy who is interested in the same deals as you is a great way to score multiple deals at your first stop. Split up when the doors open and each head for a different section. Pick up two products instead of just one and then split them between you.

Leave the kids at home

Dragging young children around on Black Friday will most likely just make you, them and everyone around you miserable. You will probably end up spending more, getting less of what you want and feeling frustrated in the process. Leave the kids home so you can focus on your list, your budget and the deals, and you’ll enjoy your day much more.

Research prices ahead of time

It’s important to remember that not all advertised deals are as great as they seem. Spend some time researching the low prices of any items you’re hoping to score so that you know what’s really a deal and what’s not.

Wear layers

If you’re planning to stand in line outside early in the morning, it may be chilly. You’ll want to dress accordingly so that you’re not miserably cold while you wait, but be sure to wear appropriate layers so that you can peel them off as the day warms up and as you race around the stores!

Bring snacks and water

Pack plenty of snacks and water so that you have something to eat and drink while you wait in line or drive between stops. Waiting too long to eat because you’re afraid you’ll miss a great deal will affect your mood and energy level, so don’t do it!

Set your expectations

While it’s important to have a list of the items you’d like to get so that you don’t end up wandering through a store, don’t expect to get everything on your list. Some items may be sold out, shopping at a certain store may take longer than you planned, or you may just run out of steam. Work through your list in order of priority so that you get the most important gifts taken care of first.

Be friendly

Some people approach Black Friday like a contest and consider everyone else their competition. They become so focused on their goal — to save money and buy more stuff — that they forget to take the time to be friendly. Try being friendly instead, building a camaraderie with the shoppers and store employees around you. A little smile goes a long way!

Carry the sale ads with you

If you’ve made detailed notes about what you want to buy and plan to stick to your list and budget, you may not need the sale ads. But it’s better to carry them all day and not need them than to want them and not have them. For example, if you’re planning to buy a GPS at a specific store, but it’s sold out when you arrive, you’ll be able to check to see what the sale prices are at the other stores on your list. Or you might come across a deal that you hadn’t noticed in the ad and want to compare the price to the other sales to make sure it’s a good deal.

Bonus Tip: Wait until Cyber Monday

While many people find the challenge of Black Friday challenging and fun, it can be stressful and frustrating if your heart’s not really in the game. If you’re looking for great deals but don’t want to deal with the hassle and the crowds, plan on shopping online on Cyber Monday instead. I can guarantee you’ll find all the best deals here at Deal Seeking Mom, and even if they’re not quite as good as the doorbusters in stores, the extra sleep and low-key day following Thanksgiving may be worth it!

I must say I’m pretty disappointed with Target at this point. Instead of taking the time to present a well thought out price matching policy, they seem to be in a reactionary mode and updating it on a whim.

After just presenting a new version of their Low Price Promise last weekend, Target has already updated it again. Going forward Target coupons will be deducted before price matching. If the price in the competitor ad is still lower, then that price will be applied and any manufacturer’s coupons will be deducted. So basically Target store coupons can no longer be deducted after the price match is made.

It seems to me that if Target really wants to provide excellent customer service and give customers an incentive to shop their store over a competitor, they would offer us a true low price guarantee, including honoring store coupons. As far as I’m concerned, price matching at Target is already difficult enough. I’ll just take my business elsewhere.

Thanks for the info, KC Penny Pinchin’ Mama!

When you think about Borders, a large selection of books neatly lined up on shelves is probably what comes to mind. I know that was my first thought. But Borders recently expanded over 500 of their stores to include a wonderful selection of high-quality educational toys and games, including one of my favorites, Melissa & Doug toys.

Borders recently gave me a $100 gift card to check out their new lineup, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out just how far I was able to stretch this money. All together I managed to score six different Melissa & Doug toys, two I Spy books, an illustrated book of military airplanes, and a small collection of Mickey Mouse board books with a figurine for my “Mickeh Mou” lovin’ baby boy. I came in slightly over budget at $117, but that also included another children’s book that I picked up to donate to the Borders Charity Book Drive.

I found the selection to be quite varied, with choices that encompassed the varied interests of all five of my children, and the employees were extremely helpful. Both ladies working at the store were visited were very knowledgeable and offered suggestions on the best items to choose and were able to help us find exactly what we were searching for.

By the way, if you love the adorable lineup of Melissa & Doug toys, you’ll be excited to know that they are buy one get one 50% off through December 28th! I sometimes think I get just as much enjoyment out of them as my kids do. Save even more by signing up for a Borders Rewards card (you’ll get awesome coupons!) and/or utilizing the buy $50 in Borders gift cards get a bonus $10 GC program.

Two lucky Deal Seeking Mom readers will each win a $100 gift card from Borders. (You’ll need to live within driving distance of a Borders’ store in order to pick up your prize.)

To enter, tell me what toys and games you would purchase with a $100 Borders gift card.

+++++++++++++++

Every reader has four methods available to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, three, or four for up to a total of 4 entries!!!

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Alice.com. All opinions are 100% mine.

If you haven’t had a chance to check out Alice.com, now would be a great time to do so. You’ll find cleaning supplies, food, personal care items, baby items, pet food, and more — all of your household essentials — all on one easy-to-navigate site.

While the prices may be higher than what you hard core couponers are used to, there are still bargains to be found, and with free shipping, it’s a nice option when you can’t get to the store for some reason.

Cool features:

  • Low prices — while the prices may not be the lowest around, they are competitive with the regular prices of grocery and big box stores. Here’s a hint — to find the best deasl click on “Other Ways to Shop” and then click “Shop the Best Deals.”

  • Clip-free coupons — take advantage of clip-free coupons to save some cash. These are often in the same amounts as the Sunday inserts; however, you may only use one like coupon per item so that makes stocking up difficult. Coupons are deducted automatically though, making it easy to save hundreds of dollars annually without any extra work.

Walgreens just released a new $5/$25 purchase coupon valid on Sunday 11/22 and Monday 11/23. This should help us score some fantastic deals next week!

Note the fine print: Purchase amount of $25 or more must be before taxes and after all manufacturer and Walgreens coupons and discounts. Limit one coupon per customer per offer.

Not all stores enforce the $25 total after coupons, but it pays to be aware of this beforehand.

Thanks, Abundant Food Savings!
