The resource management plan for 1.2 million acres of land in the spectacular Colorado Plateau region is up for review by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The current Resource Management Plan (RMP) for this area has been in place since 1987.

Possible land uses for this area in the future include increased uranium mining and oil and natural gas exploration. The wild lands of western Colorado represent a masterpiece of erosion, weathering and wildness.

This wild area is riddled with shale hills and rocky sandstone gorges. High-definition (HD) radio is the latest technological advance in broadcasting. You may hear HD radio on both the AM and the FM band. HD radio is not satellite radio. HD radio is broadcast by antenna, so you must be within the listening area of an HD station to hear it.

You will be amazed at how many local radio stations, both AM and FM, are broadcasting in HD. Many stations plan to broadcast in HD soon, too. Why? The sounds you hear are crystal clear and do not fade in and out like analog signals. You may listen to a simulation of HD and non-HD radio on the hdradio.com site.

To listen to digital AM and FM programming, all you need is an HD radio receiver. The beauty of HD radio is that the digital signal is piggybacked on the analog signal, so there is no cost for you to listen. The digital part of the signal contains information that is not sent with the analog signal, like information about the song title and artist.

This extra bit of information sent with the digital signal enables a neat feature called song tagging. When you hear a song on the FM band of the HD radio that you like, just hit the "tag" button on the radio. The song and the song information are saved to your iPod. Your selected songs show up in an iTunes play list as "tagged." This allows you to click, download and buy the songs you want directly from the Apple® iTunes Music Store.

Many new cars come with HD radio receivers. To add an HD radio receiver to your car ranges in price from $100 to $400. If you want to listen to HD radio at home, you will need a Jensen JiMS 525i (pictured below) or other name brand HD radio receiver. Portable HD radio receivers start at $100.

Robert Redford sent out a red-hot letter last week on behalf of the NRDC Action Fund asking for support in stopping the Bush administration’s plan to allow gas and oil companies to plunder Utah’s precious Redrock wilderness near Canyonlands and Arches National Parks. A little light reading (391 pages) for the President-Elect, courtesy of 29 environmental groups that collaborated to bring attention to the most important issues in a coherent form. This time of year is when all the little yard critters try to crawl into my house for water and warmth. I thought I had sealed up all access, but last night I found out different. When I removed my clothes from the dryer, they smelled bad. I made my son take the dryer vent off so I could check it. Sure enough, a little mouse had crawled up in the dryer vent and died. After I gagged awhile, I asked my husband to get another dryer vent and a strip of screen so that I could prevent this from happening again.

If you live in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Texas, Arizona or Colorado, you know that pest management is a year round proposition. Green pest control is mostly preventative. The first thing is to seal your home against intrusion by pests. Check any place there is a protrusion of pipe, vent or duct work through your foundation, walls or roof. If you have siding on your home, check anywhere the ground meets the siding for termites and carpenter ants. Seal these areas.

Ensure that your doors and windows shut securely and completely, using weather-stripping to add another layer of protection. Check the condensation pipe from the internal air conditioner/heat pump to where it empties outside your home and add a small piece of screen. Pest management includes keeping compost containers and garbage cans away from the home.

If prevention does not work, natural pest control products include boric acid, Diatomaceous earth, clove oil, mint, cedar, catnip, soapy water and even beer. Certain plants, like fleabane, marigolds and cucumbers, repel pest naturally. Check the library or local pest management service for information. Only use poison in your home or your yard as a last resort.

Last week The US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals slowed down the authorization of a major Arctic offshore oil-drilling program. The court found that the plan proposed by Shell Offshore Inc., failed to adequately consider the effect of drilling on bowhead whales and other Arctic wildlife, as well as native villagers. The Minerals Management Agency must now do a better environmental review of the project -- which will probably be reconsidered under the next administration.

via Center for Biological Diversity (email)

Tags: offshore drilling, arctic, bowhead whales, native people, shell oil
