So I decided to check out Google Chrome and downloaded it the other day to check it out. I am back to using Flock again as of this morning but I am still not happy with it.

I really liked Chrome and probably could have come to use it as my default browser. As a matter of fact I had even set it as default until last night. It is faster than Firefox, Flock and IE 7 (and on my system and used quite a bit less memory. I also like the way it compartmentalizes the tabs and memory usage. If one of them became non-responsive the rest were fine and I could kill the task without crashing down the other 25 tabs that I might have open at the same timr. I was very impressed with it. Using Flock, Firefox or IE for a couple of hours and a bunch of tabs and windows open I usually have to kill the whole process after a couple of hours and forget using iTunes and actually listening to music at the same time. WIth Chrome I was able to not only listen to iTunes but keep several different windows open and working at the same time.

So why the switch back to Flock?

I spent two and a half hours working on a post last night. Several thousand words. Shadowscope was apparently offline for 40 minutes or so for some reason so the last autosave Movabletype had done missed 3/4 of the post. I wasn’t aware of it because my connection was fine. Anyway, I went to publish the entry and of course got a DNS error. When I tried to go back to the previous page most of the entry was gone. I wanted to cry. With Firefox and Flock I can spend an hour or two working on an entry and if for some reason my draft isn’t saved on the server I can go back to the posting form and most or all of it will still be there. I have even used Task Manager to kill flock and when I reopened a new browser window it has saved my entered text. That in itself is worth sticking with to me.

I don’t even mind not having access to plugins. If Google would add in saving of text entered into forms I would switch back in a heartbeat. It’s just not worth losing two frigging hours of work.

I used to use Windows Live Writer to post blog entries but it’s too damn buggy, which is why I switched back to the MT interface in the first place.

Tivo Blog is one of my favorite sites to visit. They always have something interesting for me to learn about related to Tivos as well as other HTPC related stuff. If you haven’t been you should go check it out and read the original article below as well as some other nifty stuff.

I upgraded my Series 3 a while ago however, I didn’t use the InstantCake solution that was shown in this video. Instead, I used an upgrade drive from DVRupgrade.com that was already formatted for use with my TiVo. If you own a Series 3 or TiVoHD, you could just go with a DVR Expanderdrive which allows you to add storage to your TiVo without having to open the case.

No matter how you do it, adding additional storage to your TiVo is a great idea. Now that I have a 750GB drive in my Series 3 I never have to worry about one of my recordings being deleted because I don’t have enough space.

Jon Hicks has a great post detailing the use of a Mac mini in place of an AppleTV. By going with the mini over the AppleTV, Hicks gets the added features of increased video format support, PVR functionality (through EyeTV), and DVD playback and ripping. The guide also focuses on how to make it work smoothly with a bluetooth wireless mouse/keyboard (and via screensharing in Leopard), and the drawbacks when things crash and you have to control it from your couch.

Although it sounds like there are some drawbacks to running a Mac mini from your living room couch, the added functionality certainly sounds appealing and I’ll personally be thinking about going this option whenever I decide to stream movies to another TV or update my current AppleTV.

So I got into another argument with one of my waitresses today over diet pills that work and whether or not she should be working out or not. I am a big believer in exercise and I feel like just taking supplements by themselves is not particularly healthy for you. Part of the reason is because since I started working out I feel much better not only physically but emotionally as well. I guess I never should have allowed myself to get sucked into that argument anyway but I was tired and stressed out.

The MPAA had a good idea setting up a legal moview download site but it has been a wasted effort. Read more about it below and don’t forget to visit WebTV Wire.

The MPAA has had a slight change of focus and now wants to educate instead of irritate with a central website to help people find legal downloads, but is it doomed to fail?

This is an attempt to draw people away from the piracy realm. While this seems like a step in the right direction the issues of excessive DRM and over-pricing will likely make it an ineffective strategy. People will continue to be drawn to piracy when it offers a better service than the legal alternative.

The MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) is the organization charged with protecting the rights of movie studios in the US, and seeing as that’s where Hollywood is, that’s a pretty large chunk of the worldwide movie industry.

Fight Or Promote?

Since the emergence of the Internet as a viable source for obtaining copies of movies, a large part of the MPAA’s fight has been online, promoting legal sources of movie downloads, while trying to inhibit illegal sources.

Attack on illegal sources such as torrents and peer-to-peer clients has included legal shut-downs, filtering college campuses, and that whole sorry TorrentSpy mess.

Now, rather than going after what it deems the bad guys, the MPAA has decided to instead focus on promoting the legal destinations for movie downloads. To that end, it is in the process of setting up a one stop shop for legal sources such as Amazon, Netflix, Apple iTunes, and others.

Directory Website

According to Variety the as-yet unnamed website will work as a kind of directory, with links to external sources allowing consumers to purchase cinema tickets, buy or rent DVDs, and download copies of the movie to their PC. This is a bit like what LocateTV.com is already doing.

All of the major studios are thought to be behind the initiative, which is being done in an effort to those people who can’t quite determine legal and illegal sources for movies on the Web.

While you may be thinking that those people surely don’t exist, there are more people venturing online now than ever before, and not all of them will be au fait with the actual difference between BitTorrent and iTunes.

In fact there are a lot of paid torrent and movie download services which provide pirated versions of movies, and the less tech savvy among us would not be able to tell if the content is pirated or not, especially when these paid sites claim to be legal.

A Noble Cause… At Last

This is the kind of thing the MPAA should have been doing a long time ago, working with new technology to rise up to consumer demand, rather than trying to fight it.

While I think piracy will always exist, and there will always be an illegal trade in movies, and TV content, the more legitimate destinations there are on the Web, the less chance there is of it becoming an out of control problem.

A Wasted Effort?

Unfortunately with legal video downloads coming with more DRM and more restrictions than a VCR, as well as having higher costs than renting or buying a tangible DVD, the TV and movie industry is still way off meeting consumer demands.

So while this is a step in the right direction its a pointless step if these other issues are not addressed.

I talk a lot at one of my other sites about finances and Debt consolidation among other things. Generally over here I just talk about how I’m spending my money or how I want to spend my money

The thing is, in order to have that extra money to buy toys you have to be able to afford it. The average American is in serious debt. Most of us carry way too much debt and I’ve been there before as well. I’ve found over the last few years a few things that seem to work.

One is to make sure and always pay cash for things or if you have to use a credit card for stuff such as online purchases pay it off immediately. Another is to live beneath your means. Don’t buy cars and houses that you can’t afford. A good rule of thumb for a house is to only buy at about three times your yearly salary. If you take out any kind of Debt relief loan make sure that the terms are favorable. You are better off paying the minimum payment twice a month on credit cards than you are taking out a loan at a higher interest rate. No matter what you do if you are in trouble with your finances make sure and look for information on Debt help. Credit counseling can be a very helpful thing to do as well.

Most of the lessons I have learned have been the hard way but there are plenty of resources both on and offline to teach yourself about finances. One is Bills.Com. You can check out your Bills IQ while you are there and see how you match up against the rest of us. I took the quiz myself and scored a B+. That’s because I currently carry a balance on some credit cards and have spent the last year or two cleaning up a mess we allowed ourselves to get into. Just because I have the knowledge doesn’t mean I always listen to it.
