Hello everyone! Just want to inform all of you that I'll be on holidays from 14 December 2008 to 6 January 2009. I won't be updating my blog during that time as I'll be busy celebrating Christmas, my birthday and new year in Kuching, Sarawak.

I'd like to wish all of you, a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Have lots of fun, be safe! Happy holidays everyone!

This week's choice is C's choice, taken from the movie Dirty Dancing. I have never watched the movie before, somehow I just can't relate to 80s era even though I'm an 80s baby! :P I just found out that C actually entered a dancing competition with his cousin's classmate. They went to the finals but didn't win. A couple who were Penang dancing champions won. Unfair right? The competition was for amateurs and the couple were pros!

C can't dance anymore nowadays since he met an accident a few years back. Guess I won't be seeing him boogie at all. :( Have fun watching and happy Monday!

I've been participating in LadyJava's Music Monday at my other blog, so I thought why not start Music Monday here too? I think it's a brilliant idea anyway! I've chosen my favourite song by Donny and Marie Osmond, Anytime Sunshine. I love the simplicity of the lyrics and melody. I wonder what it's like to grow up in the 70s. I think it's my favourite era. ;)

p/s. Thanks LJ for starting Music Monday!

Shopping is something that everyone can't afford to avoid, unless you have someone who does it for you, of course. Here are some tips that I personally use as my shopping mantra. These apply to any type of shopping, be it grocery or even clothes!

Tip #1 - No shopping on empty stomach
You might want to get a bite before going for a shopping spree. If you shop while your stomach is grumbling, you might find that everything on the food shelves look extra appealing. You might end up with a cartload of unnecessary items and end up buying food that are high in calories. You might also end up buying that ugly garment just because you're too hungry and can't wait to go to eat.

Tip #2 - No children, please
Unless you're buying clothes for your kids, try not to bring them shopping with you. Kids get tired easily and they have shorter attention span than adults, so they get cranky easily. In the end, you might end up rushing on your shopping and make choices that you might regret later. If you really have to bring your children, make sure someone is there to watch over them while you're shopping.

Tip #3 - Buy in bulk
It is wise to buy nonperishables such as toilet rolls, shampoo, talcum powder and detergent. You'll save a lot if you do this. However, don't buy perishable items like vegetables and poultry products in a large amount, unless you are cooking for a large number of people. You might put them to waste if they're being kept for a long time.

Tip #4 - Check the dates
Due dates, best before dates, preparation dates, they are all important. This is a good practice as you can avoid purchasing expired items buy making sure the due dates are a year or at least a few months ahead. You should look at the preparation dates of meat, fish, and other freshly packed products. The dates will help you determine their freshness.

Tip #5 - Be extra alert
When shopping for clothes, check for tears, snags, loose buttons and zips that are broken or stuck. Don't forget to check if the garment is dirty or faded. Unless you're buying used clothes, brand new clothes shouldn't have these defects. The same goes for food items, don't buy canned food if the cans are rusty.

Have fun shopping as always, but this time wiser with my 5 tips! :)

There are many ways on how we can manage our income. Everyone has their own ways of managing their money. These are a few tips that I am currently trying to implement to improve my money management skills.

a) Save 10% of your monthly salary
Save at least 10% of your monthly salary, either in fixed deposit, to another bank account, or if you're in Malaysia, save them in ASB. Although 10% may not seem much, but you'll be surprised how much you can save in a year just by doing so. For example, if you're earning RM1500 per month, by saving 10% = RM150 x 12 months, you'll get RM1800 by the end of the year. If you save RM1800 in ASB, you'll probably get at least 10% dividend, which means by the end of next year, you'll get a total of RM1980 in your ASB account!

b) Pay off your utility bills
Once you get your salary, pay off all important bills, such as water and electricity bills. Allocated a certain amount for monthly home rental or payment, for petrol or public transportation, groceries, and credit card debts. Make it a habit to pay your bills on time, or else you'll need to pay more interests and also be fined for late payments.

c) Buy needs and not wants
Groceries and toiletries are needs. That expensive, branded perfume, that cute handbag and the latest game console are wants. If you went shopping one day and came across an item that you don't need but want, try to delay your purchase for at least a day. After a few days, chances are you might not want it as much as before. If you really want a particular item, save a little each month to buy it.

d) Keep track of your spendings
If you can help it, save by not purchasing anything when you go out. I always have lunch at home before going out for a movie. That way, I won't be hungry and I don't need to have lunch outside. Home-cooked food is definitely cheaper and it's healthier too! When spending for groceries, make a list and stick to your budget. Keep track of your spendings by keeping your receipts. By knowing what your money is spent for, you'll notice how much you waste on unnecessary things.

Remember, watch what you spend on and save! The number one tip to be a millionaire is by not spending! Happy saving. :)

I know of some people who just can't save. Spending is fun, but make sure you save as much. Here are my ways of being frugal:

Buy only your necessities. If you can survive without it, you’re probably better off without it. I won’t buy high quality toilet rolls, because a toilet roll is a toilet roll. We’ll still use it for our “business” in the loo, so why spend more on something you’re going to flush down the drain?

Pay off your debts. When you get your salary, make sure you pay off all your debts or at least part of it. Make it as a habit. This is one habit you should never change.

Shop during major sales. Take advantage of discounts and offers. Buy high quality items for half price or less. Quality items tend to last long, hence allowing you to save money in the long run.

Don’t buy a car. I don’t have a car and I use public transportation all the time. Car value deteriorates with time, so it’s not a good investment. When I use public transport, I am forced to walk. That means, I exercise more. You could buy a motorcycle, though. It beats having a car, except when it rains. ;)

Collect coins. My boyfriend and I love to collect 50 cent coins. We save about RM200 a year with this method. I call it “forced saving“. You can try saving dollar notes or whatever currency you use too. You’ll be surprised how much you can save.

Why don't you share YOUR ways of being frugal? I'd love to know!
