Fully in the swing of our first week “back to school” since the new year, and we are learning about the10 commandments. He is really loving it. We are only on the 2nd commandment, but he understands them completely. Veggie Tales is helping, too. The 2nd commandment being about idols, the Veggie Tales story about the chocolate bunny *shadrack, meshack, a billy goat* was discussed. Very helpful. Thank God for Veggie Tales.

We did an eye chart the other day here at home and found out that he probably has an astigmatism in his left eye. It’s not surprising. I had one in my left eye growing up, my sisters have both had to wear glasses, his father and his grandparents have glasses. Now it’s a matter of taking him in for a checkup and getting him a scrip for glasses. Poor little 5 year old. At least we can afford better glasses than the ones my sisters and I had as children. He will look dapper in his.

He got some really great presents for Christmas, some of which we will be using in our homeschool time. This one has 30 educational games:

Then there were 3 books his aunt gave him with software for children between first and third grades. Those will come in handy, for sure.

Other presents included clothing, star wars toys, wall e toys, and action figures. He had a great Christmas!

The best part for him was having his dad with him through it all *mine, too!*.

We have been slacking off the hard work this month BIG time. Last night he learned about Christmas in Germany and Austria. Tonight we might read some about another country. I have two Reader’s Digest Christmas books. One was my mother’s till she handed it down to me. He is in the Christmas play as Joseph on Sunday night and can tell you the full Christmas story, down to Jesus having to flee for Egypt and come back later.

We made an advent calendar last night *better late than never* and he is having a blast coloring the tree.

We have gradually been decorating the house. This week we are going to be doing some science: baking cookies! I think that counts, right?

We get to go to Longwood Gardens today. We are all so excited we can hardly contain our joy. In just a few more hours, we will be bundling up for the adventure through God’s created beauty. I have my new camera, so I should be able to get a good number of awesome pictures! I might be more excited than he is. This morning, we took a look through what is blooming outdoors and indoors on their website. We talked about the different flowers and he pointed out some of the relationships between what he saw there and what he has seen in his every day world. It should be great!!!

Trying to TELL him the story didn’t really work, so I had to find a way to show him. Thanks to GodTube I found the PERFECT adaptation for my son:

Yesterday my son got an impromptu lesson from his father on how to fix a DVD player and a VCR. He got a good look at the inner workings, and was allowed to help screw bolts into place.

They played the historic Samurai game again, too.

Today we talked about the Vascular system. He wanted to know why his father takes pills. We talked about high blood pressure, veins, and then he was done. He got squeamish when he saw the pictures of the blood vessels online. They weren’t really that graphic, but they made him uncomfortable. I’m like this from the boy who gets excited at movie carnage LOL.

We are planning a trip to Chuck E. Cheese on Monday. I joined a field trip group in New Jersey and we are hoping to get to Longwood Gardens for the Christmas fanfare with them.
